How bad is the mental health crisis? Probably worse than you think.

Do you know how bad the mental health crisis is in the United States? These infographics from the National Alliance of Mental Health show some troubling statistics:

  • 17% of youth (6-17 years) experience a mental health disorder.
  • Of those youth, only 51% will receive treatment in a given year.
  • The average delay between symptom onset and treatment is 11 years.
  • Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for people ages 10-34
  • 1 in 5 of adults will experience mental illness.

Only half of the youth with a mental health disorder will receive treatment this year. For most, it takes over 10 years to even start treatment.

If we aren’t providing timely treatment to our youth, wouldn’t it make sense that over 20% of adults struggle with mental illness? Is it any surprise then that suicide has become the 2nd leading cause of death in our young people?

This is one reason we’re starting Joven Health — All children deserve access to mental health support when they need it, not ten years after their struggles begin.
